Dryer Vent Installations and Repairs

There seems to be some confusion as to the acceptable length of a dryer vent.

The dryer vent code of NY State states the following:M1502.6 Duct length. The maximum length of a clothes dryer exhaust duct shall not exceed 25 feet (7620 mm) from the dryer location to the wall or roof termination.

The maximum length of the duct shall be reduced 2.5 feet (762 mm) for each 45-degree (0.8 rad) bend and 5 feet (1524 mm) for each 90-degree (1.6 rad) bend.

The maximum length of the exhaust duct does not include the transition duct.

Exceptions:
1. Where the make and model of the clothes dryer to be installed is known and the manufacturer’s installation instructions for the dryer are provided to the building official, the maximum length of the exhaust duct, including any transition duct, shall be permitted to be in accordance with the dryer manufacturer’s installation instructions.

As you can see, there is an exception to this rule and the homeowner has the option to follow the recommended length of 25 feet or to use the manufacturers instructions. Some manufacturers suggest that you can vent as long as 80 feet.

After speaking with Building Inspectors in New York State they all have said the same thing to us.  In their opinion they would always vent the shortest and most direct route.

Because of this inconsistency and potential hazard, as well as the recommendation of the building inspectors, My Dryer Vent Guy will not install any vent over the recommended 25 feet rule.

Proper dryer vent installation is a critical step to ensure that your family is safe and that your clothes dry correctly.

Venting you clothes dryer to the outside is a building code requirement in most jurisdictions.Improper dryer vent installation and the use of inferior materials will result in damage to your home.

Clothes dryers that are not vented to the outside of the home will create a mess of lint and excess moisture in the air you breathe in your home. Also the hot air in the dryer contains gas by-products like carbon monoxide that are extremely dangerous.

Professional dryer vent installation ensures that your clothes dryer has adequate air flow for safety and efficiency.

Many times homebuilders sub contract the installation of the dryer vent to technicians that do not specialize in dryer vent installation. Thousands of dollars of damage to your home can be created in a relatively short period of time (5 to 8 years) if you have a dryer vent that is not installed with the proper materials and know how.

A damaged dryer vent, or a dryer vent constructed from improper materials, can create a fire hazard in your home. Damaged dryer vents can also release potential mold-creating moisture and lint that may cause allergies or other health hazards.

Inefficient dryers add additional costs to your utility bills.
